Teacher Training - Questioning Skills
This training workshop offers some practical strategies that teachers can use to engage students through questioning. The techniques suggested are tried and tested; they draw on both academic research and the experience of practising teachers.
Questioning is fundamental to good teaching and learning. When effective questioning is a significant feature of lessons, students are more likely to:
  • develop a fuller understanding of an idea because they have tried to explain it themselves.
  • Be clear about the key issues in a lesson.
  • Easily recall existing knowledge
  • Be able to link the ideas in the lesson with their existing knowledge.
  • Tackle problems at a deep level and be able to extend their thinking.
  • Engage easily with a task because they are clear about what is expected.
  • Develop independence in the way they learn and think.
